The moose is the largest member of the deer family and is the tallest mammal in North America. Moose are usually 6 feet tall from their shoulders to their feet. Females usually weigh between 800 to 1300 pounds. Males usually weigh between 1200 to 1600 pounds. They have long, brown, thick fur. Their hair is hollow which helps to warm them up quickly and to keep them warm. Their legs are long, their front legs being longer than the back legs.
The male moose has broad antlers, which are 5 to 6 feet across. When antlers first start to grow in the summer, they have a soft fuzzy skin called velvet on them. The velvet has blood vessels in it, that deliver nutrients to help the antlers grow. In the late summer the blood vessels dry up and the velvet falls off.
Moose are usually known as “twig eaters.” When it’s warm moose eat leaves, twigs, and buds off hardwood and softwood trees and shrubs. It also eats water plants like water lilies.

Location: melody ranch
Date: 5.21.08
Time: 5 pm
Temp: 53 degrees
Weather: Thunderstorm
Wind Conditions: Heavy
Soil conditions: The soil is muddy from the rain and has a lot of puddles
Hypothesis: The willow trees' buds have fully grown and leaves are starting to form. There has been so much rain lately, so the vegetation should be really green this summer. The weather looks like it is going to continue being rainy for atleast a couple of days. There are earthworms everywhere and robins have been walking around eating them.

Location: Melody Ranch
Date: 5.15.08
Time: 5pm
temp: 61 Degrees
Weather: Sunny with a slight cloud cover
Wind Conditions: There is a strong breeze
Soil conditions: The soil is really dry and dusty
Hypothesis: The weather is going to most likely become even warmer and supposedly get up to 75 degrees. It has become a lot warmer from my last observation, and is continuing to get warmer. This sun will help vegitation even more, expecially from the rain the last couple of days. I looked closely at a willow tree, and it looks like it is starting to grow buds that will most likely bud in the next week or two. Most of the grass is now covered in dandalions. There are more and more weeds coming up also, and they usually get really bad in the summer
Thursday, May 15, 2008
Location: Melody Ranch
Date: 5.14.08
Time: 6pm
temp: 52 Degrees
Weather: Cloud cover with a little bit of rain
Wind Conditions: There is a cold breeze
Soil conditions: The soil is a little damp from the rain but is mostly dry
Hypothesis: This little bit of rain is going to help vegetation even more. The grass is now all green but some of the aspen trees and willows are still bare. There has been a lot of rain lately though so these trees will probably start to bud. Now all of the birds are back, and there was a moose this morning.

Observation 1
Time- 8:43 pm
Temp. 39 degrees
Weather Conditions- There is a cloud cover of 100% and it rained for about two hours.
Wind Conditions- Theres a slight breeze
Soil Conditions- The soil is wet and damp from the rain, and in a lot of places there are puddles
Hypothesis- This rain will most likely increase vegetation and melt the rest of the snow that is still left over. There are some birds such as black birds, robins, and swallows coming back. Some grass has come up green but most of it is brown and looks dead.
